Whitefish Area Information - In the late 1800's in the northwest corner of Montana, Whitefish began as a fur trading center. In the early 1900's, railroad workers cut the first trees for the Whitefish town site, hence the name "Stumptown." Whitefish later flourished with both the logging industry and the Great Northern Railway, and today it enjoys all the best qualities of a quaint alpine village retaining much of the charm and charisma of its early days. A full range of winter activities including skiing, snowboarding, snowmobiling, or just relaxing with family and friends. Summer offers endless outdoor activities such as hiking, mountain biking, horse-back riding, boating, fishing and many more outdoor activities. During fall and spring the pace slows down a bit providing a great opportunity to soak up the natural beauty of the area.
